CITY OF PHOENIX PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department has many environmental education programs, several of which have received Valley Forward Environmental Excellence Awards. The city's parks, preserves and facilities target just about every type of environmental education program imaginable. They have programs focusing on plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert, prehistoric Hohokam civilization, urban forestry, river ecology and orienteering. Its facilities offer excellent field trip opportunities, some of which include desert parks and preserves such as Papago Park, South Mountain, and special facilities including, Pueblo Grande Museum, the Japanese Friendship Garden and Tea House, Heritage Square, Steele Indian School Park, the Irish Cultural Center, and Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Project. Programs are geared to different age groups.
