WHAT: Nationally renowned experts on smart growth will address 300+ business and civic leaders at Valley Forward's Livability Summit in a half-day program on building quality communities. Among topics to be discussed are: What is smart growth and how do communities grow smarter? Why are some places more livable, desirable and sustainable than others? How does Maricopa County rank? Can land use and open space planning, urban design, water management, renewable energy, transportation and air quality be linked in integrated solutions to growth issues?

WHO: Keynote speakers include CHRISTINE TODD WHITMAN, co-chair, National Smart Growth Council & former U.S. EPA Administrator; and JOEL GARREAU, editor for the Washington Post and author of "Radical Evolution" and "Edge City: Life on the New Frontier." Whitman actively seeks ways to influence government, business and industry to remove barriers to applying principles of good planning, better known as "smart growth." Garreau is dedicated to the creation of more livable and profitable urban areas worldwide.

In addition, a nationally recognized panel of experts on growth issues and livable communities will participate in an interactive moderated panel discussion. Panelists include: Gil Friend of Natural Logic Inc. in Berkeley, Calif.; Michael Pyatok of Stardust Center for Affordable Homes & the Family in Phoenix, Ariz.; and Jim Durrett of the Livable Communities Coalition in Atlanta, Georgia.
