The story, “Champagne flight” is written by Jill Norris in 1982. To be a grown up, you need to learn the basic rules, you need to stand out as a responsible person, be polite and not behave childish or for that matter, be one. Jill Norris specific highlights, how a teenage girl, wants to represent herself as an adult, and to be a grown up, even though she’s only a child.
“The narrator” or main character is about to take her exams, when her parents move to Washington, because the father got a new position at his job. While the parents are in Washington, “The narrator” lives with a couple, Mr and Mrs Widness, who lives across the street, so ...view middle of the document...
That is also one of the details that tells us that she’s old on the outside, but young on the inside. We can also see that “the narrator” is a very naive person.
She doesn’t seem to realize anything when she’s talking to Serena. She even sees that Serena takes a pill, but “the narrator” doesn’t understand what’s really going on, and when she finds out what had happened to Serena she still not understand what truly happened to her. I see these examples as signs that she’s not ready to be like she wants. She’s not full-grown as she thinks she is.
Serena is a totally other person than “the narrator”. She almost has the opposite problem. She wants to seem younger than she is. Serena isn’t grown up either, even though she’s an adult. She doesn’t take care of herself, and she needs attention all the time. She’s almost screaming for help. But that’s not easy when you have as many troubles as Serena. She takes pills and drugs, she drinks too much and she’s also a stripper. But in some way she doesn’t seem to know that she has those problems. She just keeps doing what she has always been doing. Stripping, drinking and taking pills. She wants to look younger, but still she’s not old. You can see that by the way she talks to “the narrator” and the things she says and does, and how she behaves.
The relationship between “The Narrator” and Serena is at first a little awkward....
