Ang Pananakop ng mga Espanyol
Kolonisasyon at Kristiyanisasyon

Sa pagdating ng mga dayuhang Espanyol sa ating bansa, naging magulo na ang pamumuhay ng mga Pilipino. Layunin ng mga Espanyol na sakupin at pamunuan ang Pilipinas. Mayroong dalawang estratehiya sa pananakop ang mga  Espanyol, ang Ebanghelisasyon; na sinasagisag ng krus. Ito ay isinasagawa sa mapayapang paraan sa pamamagitan ng pagpapalaganap ng Kristiyanismo sa ating bansa sa paraang Kristiyanisasyon. Ikalawa ay ang Kolonisasyon; ito ay isinasagisag ng espada. Ito ay isinasagawa sa pamamagitan ng paggamit ng lakas-militar. Ang tributo ay hawig din sa sistemang encomienda subalit labis-labis na sapilitang pagbabayad ng buwis ang ipinataw ng mga espanyol sa mga Pilipino. Noong 1589, itinaas ito sa 10 reales at noong 1851 sa 12 reales. Noong 1884 tinanggal ang tributo at pinalitan ng " cedula personal". Ito ay nakabatay sa laki ng kinikita ng isang manggagawa. Kabilang na rin sa kanilang mga ipinatupad ay ang bandala, monopolyo ng tabako, at ang kalakalang galleon. Lahat ng ito ay nagdulot ng matinding paghihirap sa mga Pilipino.

Dahil hindi lubusang tinanggap ng mga Pilipino ang Kolonisasyon at ang pagpapalaganap ng mga Espanyol ng Kristiyanismo sa ating bansa, nagkaroon ng paghihimagsik ang mga Pilipino laban sa mga Espanyol. Nagkaroon sila ng ibat-ibang propaganda katulad na lamang ng pag-aalsa na pinamunuan ni Francisco Dagohoy ng Bohol. Maituturing patriyotismo ang pag-aalsang ito dahil ang tunay na dahilan ng isinagawa niyang pag-aalsa ay dahil hindi binigyan ng isang paring Espanyol ng Kristiyanong libing ang kanyang kapatid na namatay sa isang duwelo. Sa buong pananakop ng  ng mga Espanyol, tinatayang mahigit tatlong daang pag-aalsa ang nangyari sa ating bansa, bagamat karamihan sa mga pag-aalsang ito ay nabigo dahil sa kawalang ng pambansang pagkakaisa. Sinamantala ng mga Espanyol ang pagkakawatak-watak ng mga pilipino bilang magkakahiwalay na baranggay, antas ng katayuan sa lipunan at pangkat-etniko. Patuloy nilang pinag-iinit ang alitan ng mga pilipino. Sa halip na tanggalan ng kapangyarihan ang mga raja at datu, pinagkalooban nila iyo ng pribilehiyong magmay-ari ng lupa, pagiging kabilang sa uri ng principalia, hindi kasali sa obligasyong polo y servicio personal at pananatili sa kapangyarihan. 
Kapalit ng mga pribilehiyong ito, ay dapat magpatupad sila ng malulupit na patakaran. Dahil dito, hinadlangan nito ang maagang pagkamulat ng mga Pilipino sa kamay ng mga Espanyol. Ang mga gobernadorcillo at cabeza de baranggay ang nagsilbing tagapagpahupa ng galit ng mga pilipino. Sa katunayan ang miga raja at datu dati rin nilang pinuno ang nagpatupad ng mga malulupit na patakaran, nagbagong bihis lang sila bilang gobenadorcillo at cabeza de baranggay.
Nasyonalismong Pilipino

         Ang kaisipang Nasyonalismo o pagkamakabansa ay nagsimula sa Europa noong ika-18 dantaon. Ang kalayuan ng Europa sa Pilipinas ang pangunahing dahilan kung bakit sa ikalawang-hati lamang ng ika-19 nabuhay ang kaisipang ito ng Pilipinas. Maliban pa nito, ang pangyayari noong ika-14 dantaon ang naging pangunahing hadlang sa pagsilang at pagkabuo ng damdaming makabansa o nasyonalismo ng mga Pilipino. Nangunnguna sa mga ito ang pagbubukas ng Pilipinas sa pandaigdigang pangangalakal noong 1834.
