Proposed IS System
Within the different business units, there seems to be a missing piece of the puzzle that would tie all the processes more firmly together. There are several solutions available but one of the most used solutions is a product from Microsoft, SharePoint 2010. “Need a corporate portal? SharePoint. Want a collaboration system? SharePoint. A document management system? Web publishing system? For those and many other tasks, companies have made use of the SharePoint platform” (Ziff Davis Enterprise Holdings Inc, 2011). Microsoft SharePoint allows for a central location of documents, spreadsheets, company information, organization workflows, and other information sources. It also provides security by limiting who can access any item of information through active directory of the existing infrastructure design. Each business unit can benefit from different aspects of Microsoft SharePoint.
Microsoft SharePoint can provide many benefits to the information systems business process or unit. Information systems can host shared pages that can host redundant information to users about facts and questions commonly asked and answered. They can also use a user portal to post any notices of upcoming changes to the network infrastructure or any outage notifications. Internally, they can use it to post standard operating procedures or guides developed by the different administrators as guides for all authorized. Another aspect of Microsoft SharePoint that would benefit the information systems group is the project or workflow capabilities that are offered. This would help organize and track any projects that they may be implementing. Projects could have their own page, allowing notes to be added as the projects progress, acting as a written journal of the progress. This would help in creating a lessons learned at the end of projects.
