1. What is patriarchy and specifically what is the ‘disembodied patriarch’?
It is a system in which the father or the eldest male is head of the family. So, a social system in which males are the primary authority figures central to social organisation, occupying roles of political leadership, moral authority, and control of property, and where fathers hold authority over women and children.
It seems like the disembodied patriarchy describes best the financial world. Indeed, it is disembodied because men are just suits, decision makers, it is like there is a dehumanisation with this career. And the circle is fuelled by their next workmates who are juste people with the same background waiting for their time to come.
2. What are the main aspects described by McDowell of the ‘gendered capitalism’ in the City of London financial sector?
-Two iconic figures : disembodied patriarch and the different version of masculinity
-Women are as out of place as they in the mid 90s
-Exaggerated form of masculinized language and behaviour
-Sexual harassment, outrageous practices (escort girl), sexist behaviours
-no significant improvement since 90s
-unfriendly atmosphere to women on trading floors
-men are too much confident so can under estimate impact of decisions
-even court cases that women won reported in the press emphasize sexual difference
