Executive Summary

In this report we will show, via descriptive statistics, how independent variables appear to contribute to the success of motion pictures.  Using data collected from a sample of 100 motion pictures produced in 2005, we utilize the following variables: Opening Weekend Gross Sales (in millions of dollars); Total Gross Sales (in millions of dollars); Number of Theaters, and; Weeks in Top 60, to graphically depict their contribution to ...view middle of the document...

Where appropriate, brief discussion and analysis for each of the variables is presented.

Opening Weekend Gross Sales
As shown in the histogram (Figure 1-1), we can see that seventy (70) of the motions pictures from the sample made $10 million dollars or less in Opening Weekend Gross Sales.  There are only three motion pictures, “Star Wars: Episode 3,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” and “War of the Worlds” that made more than $70 million dollars in Opening Weekend Gross Sales.  These three (3) motion pictures are considered outliers in the data set.  The class size is $10 million and the histogram presents right-skewed distribution.  This is due to a few large values driving the mean upward, but subsequently having no affect on the median.

Total Gross Sales
As shown in the histogram (Figure 1-2), we can see that 77 of the motions pictures from the sample grossed 50M or less.  There are only six (6) motion pictures that totaled more than 100M of Gross Sales and should be considered an outlier in the data set.  The class size is 50M and the histogram presents right-skewed distribution.

Number of Theaters
As shown in the histogram (Figure 1-4), we can see that 65 of the motions pictures from the sample spent ten weeks or less in the top 60.  There is only one motion picture, “Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” that spent more than 25 weeks in the Top 60 and is considered an outlier in the data set.  The class (bar) size is five weeks and the histogram presents right-skewed distribution, which is common with time plots
