According to the text, “the basal reading approach is a major approach to reading that occupies the central and broadest position on the instructional continuum. It is built on scope and sequence foundations and traditionally associated with bottom-up theory, basal programs have modified in recent years with the inclusion of language experience and literature activities (Vacca 372-373).” The school principal asked me to evaluate the effectiveness of a basal reading program and a literature-based program and I did so by doing some research. The children would then be evaluated on their reading abilities and divided into groups according to their reading levels. “Teachers need to assess which educational opportunities are best offered by the reading series and then look for other reading and skill activities to support instruction” (Vacca, pg 458). They would then read books in an order of sequence and I would provide them comprehension activities after their books are done.

Selecting a reading program for the school is a very important, yet intimidating task. There should be many different types of reading programs evaluated in order to make a decision to ensure the students are getting what is best for them. I would need to ask questions about the program to include questions about students with disabilities. I would also need to ask questions to make sure the school would be more aware of the reading program. “Evaluation critera are helpful in the selection and use of instructionally worthwhile materials” (Vacca, pg 484). Based on all the evaluation I would use basal reading programs for my school. It offers the teachers a little more freedom in the way they teach their stuggling students. It also offers the students an opportunity to be able to work at their pace and at their level. I believe this to be very important.
