Despite its problem in the world now many doctors, teachers, and parents are trying to better the situation. Childhood obesity is on the rise, and I truly believe that with the right approach and the proper awareness childhood obesity could become nonexistent. I truly believe everyone wants to put a stop to childhood obesity. Childhood obesity has become a huge problem throughout the years, and is now increasing significantly. The problem itself goes back in recent years, but it is just now becoming a worldwide issue. Children are the ones who are affected by this problem, ranging from 6 – 11 years of age. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Childhood obesity is a ...view middle of the document...
After reading of Mrs. Gross’s story, I was motivated in doing my own part with my community. Seeing how this is such a big issue there are various actions that people have taken to try and eliminate the situation. Teachers and faculty have tried educating children in elementary schools to try and help them at an early age. Also teachers such as physical education teachers have implemented different exercises to minimize weight gain. My dad is actually a freshman P.E. teacher in our County. He has been in teaching for almost 30 years, and he cannot believe how lazy kids are becoming. My dad talks about how he has to beg his students to do any physical activity. It has gotten so bad that my dad has his principal come in and evaluate him atleast 4 times a week. When this happens his students actually want to partake in the activity. My dad also gives his students 2 options for their winter and spring final; a timed mile or a written exam. You would think that the students would want to do the mile no doubt, because they wouldn’t have to study. That’s definitely not the case; my dad says that fewer than 25% of his kids choose to run the mile.
Not only are Physical Education teachers noticing the significant decrease in active children. There are even some schools with after school activities for children, instead of having them go home and sit on the couch with a bag of potato chips. The possible solutions are basically just striving for children to have healthier lifestyles and finding steps to prevent the process. Healthy Children has stated a number of preventions including; encourage your child to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, limit sweetened beverages, eat at home more often & have family meals together. (Healthy Chirden.org) According to the American Heart Association, “Obese children are more prone to low self-esteem, negative body image and depression.” Children should get at least 60 minutes of vigorous physical activity a day. Parents could even pack lunches for their children, instead of having them eat school lunch. One of the biggest things that needs to happen is making physical activity fun for children.
Steps to Taking Action
I have thought a lot about what never ending problems my community has and the one thing that sticks out the most is childhood obesity. It seems like the number of overweight children these days is a problem that no one has an answer for. I feel like there are various ways I could take action in not only informing the children in my community, but the parents as well. The ones involved need to know just how big of an issue this is. There are so many things that could be done, and here are a few of my ideas. I would go to all of the elementary schools also the middle school, and I would see what items are being sold in their vending machines. I would then seek donations from the community for fruits, healthier chips...
