Conflict Resolution Essay

1225 words - 5 pages

The setting of the conflict that I was party to has to do with the creation of a prototype of a longitudinal view of patients diagnosed with Diabetes. The computer system that is used at my organization for a patient’s Electronic Health Record (EHR), delivered a data warehouse solution for ease of reporting, or so they said. Senior leadership was sold on this idea by the vendor and thought it was the perfect solution to use to create a longitudinal view of medical record data for those patients who were diagnosed with Diabetes. The longitudinal view was to include both billing data such as charges and payments and clinical data such as vital signs, lab results and prescribed medications. ...view middle of the document...

It was discovered that a request would have to be made to the vendor asking them what it would take to make a change to their data warehouse solution. Based on that request, the compromising mode was applied, the vendor would be able to make the requested changes, but it would not be immediate, we had to wait for their next release of their solution.

The conflict that was discovered for the design and intent of the delivered data marts not being usable was handled and applied by the withdrawal mode. After working with the software presentation tool with the design of the delivered data it was determined that the data warehouse was easy to use if the data presented only reported data by patient within one area of the patient’s medical record, once you tried to mix and match medical record data for more than one area, it became unusable. This was due to the way each of the data marts were designed, they were not designed to mix and match medical record data together for more than one area.

The final presentation of the Diabetes longitudinal view required the project team to come up with another way to get the data for the report. Even though the vendor was able to provide their solution with all the required data attributes and metrics, since the conflict of the design of the data marts could not be resolved, the data warehouse solution by the vendor could not be used. The conflict in this project is not uncommon, there are many projects that get sold to senior leadership as something that could be a quick win-win or return on investment when in fact, that’s not the case at all.
I am currently a member of a team assigned to a project of a very similar situation as one of the conflicts mentioned earlier. This conflict again has to do with how the vendor designed data marts do not meet the needs of the data presentation right out of the box. The goal of the project is to provide a self-service reporting tool for Distress Management in Cancer patients. One of the screening tools is a survey for measuring distress where patients are asked at their initial visit, at appropriate intervals, and as clinically indicated especially with changes in disease status (ie, remission, recurrence, progression). The survey answers are stored in the data warehouse that was delivered by the vendor, all attributes and metrics are available.

My role on the project team is to assist and train another developer on the self-service...
