What is involved in detailing a drug? Identify the various stakeholders involved in detailing. What ethical issues are raised here?
Detailing a drug is the main role of a pharmaceutical rep. They buy lists from medical societies and use that list as background in influencing physicians to prescribe certain drugs. This practice has been under scuitiny in the past decade.
So much so that in certain states it is highly regulated if not completely banned.
The stakeholders are first and foremost patients. They receive free samples. The argument is that if physians are pampered by detailers, then ...view middle of the document...
This can’t be further from truth in my opinion. The reality is, incentives from detailers, are nice but not sufficient for a physician to make biased medical decisions. When calculated, the incentives are insignificant compare to a physician’s income. Riding in a Limousine or flying to a seminar are simply not enough incentives. I personally would go for a ride if my time allows, but to make decisions based on those incentives are simply infantile. There is a price for everything. Detailers can’t afford an average physian’s price.
The prizes, and free samples as well as perks are simply to get the physician’s attention to deliver a pitch. End of the story. When one calculates the whole industry, the results are astounding, however, on small scale it is minute.
Government agencies such as dept of health and human services, in an effort to reduce corruption, have banned any providers from receiving gifts or any incentives. This is simply irrelevant. The underserved population need more providers. Scaring and threatening providers would not be an effective strategy.
My argument is that the detailing industry is supported by pharmaceutical companies and medical societies together. The main beneficieries are patients not physicians. In a larger perspective its intended to deliver information. Most prudent physicians would choose their practice based on peer reviewed scientific literature not a fact sheet given by a rep.
