CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
Facebook, otherwise known as FB, is the largest online social networking site in the world with 1.15 billion users all over the world, 757 million of which checks their Facebook account daily. Users of Facebook can create a personal profile, add other users as friends, send and receive messages ...view middle of the document...
Eventually, this results to perennial absenteeism and later, poor academic performance of the students. However, some will argue that Facebook has positive effects on the students’ performance as they tend to feel loved by their peers and tend to join more extra-curricular activities. It serves as primary source of news among students and also encourages them to do collaborative work online (O’Dell, 2011). In fact, according the data gathered by OnlineEducation.net, 1 out of 3 students use social media such as Facebook for educational purposes.
In this view, the researcher wants to find out if the use of Facebook is beneficial or harmful to the academic performance of students from Our Lady of Lourdes College Foundation. It is hoped that through real studies and quantitative analysis of data gathered from the students, the research may be able to conclude the effects of using Facebook on the academic performance of the students in the said institution and try to come up with possible recommendations on dealing with the situation.
