Lessons of honesty, morality and fairness are learned early in life. Has college sports taught young athletes that winning is more important than honesty; winning is more important than being true to oneself, or to an institution’s academic standard; when winning is more important than holding one’s head high; when “winner takes all” tactics are applauded; when winning at any cost is prized because we believe that any part of life can be “gamed”, when we believe that we “deserve it”, we have lost any claim to conscience or soul, and any expectation of respect.Yes, schools and colleges can teach these lessons and should be held accountable to do so.
