Background of the Study

The extent of a student’s learning in academics may be determined by the grades a student earns for a period of learning has been done. It is believed that a grade is a primary indicator of such learning. If a learner earns high grades it is concluded that they may also have learned a lot while low grades indicate lesser learning. Study habits, a behavior that is repeated until it is automatic, find its way in the aspects of education. Good (1998) define the term study habits as: The student’s way of study whether systematic, efficient or inefficient etc”. Going by this definition it literally means that good study habit produces positive academic performance while inefficient study habit leads to academic failure. Ozmert (2005) emphasized the importance of environmental influence as a major factor in the development of students studying habit (source: http://tinyurl.com/8g9y3gx) However, at this point, we, the researchers would like to investigate the possible relationship of the study habits and the factors affecting it to the academic achievement of the first year students of Dominican College San Juan City. We wanted to take on this topic for it would be a great help to students to develop good study habits and get better grades. The investigation of this research becomes a real and compelling motivation for us to conduct this study.

Statement of the Problem

This study intended to find out the factors affecting the study habits of first year students in Dominican College San Juan City. It also aimed to answer the following question:

*What extent of influence did the factors have on the student’s study habits?
*How did the student manage their time management for studying?
*Did the factors significantly influence students study habits?

Significance of the Study

Students. This research paper would help students to understand and build discipline in our studies. Moreover the researchers would like to help students to be able to enjoy studying with the right education and give more emphasis of what study habit they have.

Teachers will also be helped in understanding better the diversity of learning of their students. As such it is hoped that they could develop more effective methodologies in teaching their subject matter.

Guidance and Counseling Center will also be helped by this study through providing a more focused and factual knowledge on the factor affecting student’s study habits. This increased and the understanding of the...
