According to Michael P. Levine, in his book, The Prevention of Eating Problems and Eating Disorders, “Preventing eating disorders would spare many people and their families years of suffering and the specter of death from starvation or suicide.” Eating Disorders cause many problems in life; they are something we need to stop because fad diets are unhealthy in many ways.
First, fad diets are unhealthy because they cause rapid weight loss. The first cause of rapid weight loss in fad diets is women’s health, looks, and reproduction. David S. Goldbloom states in the book Medical Issues and the Eating Disorders: the Interface, “Females are more known for fad diets do to their ...view middle of the document...
1 Corinthians 6:19 states “Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own.” Paul shows that the body is not the humans, but is God’s. The “Temple,” to stay strong, needs consistent amounts of food and without it, it will crash.
Second, fad diets are unhealthy because it could cause severe illness. The first way fad diets could cause problems is they could intervene with the nervous system and the body could become ill. Goldbloom alludes “There is a broad spectrum of neurophysiologic changes associated with eating disorders.” Neuro- is relating to the nervous system and physiology is the scientific study of function in living systems; therefore, neurophysiologic means the branch of physiology dealing with the functions of the nervous system. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs, and all of the nerves that connect these organs with the rest of the body. Without part of the nervous system the human body would not function correctly, forcing severe neurological problems. The nervous system controls the human body and without control, the body would not be able to function properly. Neurological damage from unhealthy dieting is a major problem that needs to be taken care of.
The second way fad diets could cause illness is that the body does not always get the proper nutrition it needs to survive. According to Martin Downs in his Article Why Do We Keep Falling For Fad Diets, “Confusion is the real reason for these unhealthy diets, because people do not know what nutrients that is right to consume.” Nutrients are very important in dieting, and if you do not eat the certain amount of nutrients that is mandatory, it could be a damaging issue and make the body ill! WebMD in the article “Losing Weight Without Fad Diets states, “Include all important nutrients needed when dieting, because if not there is a higher chance of the body becoming sick.” The body needs a certain amount of nutrients to be healthy! The body also needs the right type of nutrients. The consumed food needs a variety of healthy and unhealthy. Frances M. Berg expresses in her book, Health Risks of Weight Loss, “These “miracle” diets often leave out whole groups of foods, which are essential in balanced, healthy eating.” The body needs a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, and proteins. If the body does not consume the necessary nutrients it could become extremely ill.
Death is a possibility in fad diets in a case that is severe enough. Death is a problem with eating disorders. Death could happen in anyone’s life. Levine affirms this by saying “Full-blown eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are debilitating, life-threatening conditions.” Those who have eating disorders such as Anorexia and Bulimia could die. Anorexia is a lack or loss of appetite for food. Bulimia is insatiable overeating. These are total opposite eating disorders but both, in very...
