Journal 2: What barriers do immigrants face when they come to Canada?
When immigrants come to Canada it’s a hard choice for some families leaving their home land and starting a new life in a different county with a different society, language, culture and believes. For some families they leave their home land to come to Canada for a better place to live, building a better future for their kids and a safe place. Immigrants that come to Canada face lots of barriers that are learning a new language, getting to know a new country, finding a home, job and new friends. We often are left on our own to find ourselves in Canada. After a period of time living in Canada, may lose his/her family traditions, beliefs and values and it changes a person. Now, I see more young teens that came here with such innocence being involved in things that they shouldn't be, just because they want to take part in the “in-crowd” like bad habits like smoking, drinking and most of all drugs.
Second story is by Mehri Yalfani “ Newcomer” is the story about a girl who was client in class because she didn’t know how to speak English. All she would say is Yes or No to every question her classmate would ask her since that was the only word she knew in English. This is a story about language barrier that when she immigrated to Canada she has faced.
Himani Bannerji an author that wrote the story “The other Family” was born in Bangladesh. This story is about seeing herself different. The understanding of other traditions can be difficult for other immigrants if they do not belong to the same traditions. In the story the girl realizes her traditions by looking at herself in the mirror and decides to change her picture of the family.
After reading these stories I realized that the barriers that immigrants face when they come to Canada can be difficult times for the families. Adapting to a country that you never been to, learning a new language, finding a new job, for some starting their education all over again, settling down to a new place and making new friends. These are all difficult barriers that a person could face. Keeping your own traditions and believes from your own culture and home land are important as well. It takes time to settle down to a country and making those changes in life can be hard but has good benefits in the end.
