During the 1960’s and 70’s new challenges faced GMC in regards to environmental concerns. Once again GMC pioneered the way into protecting the environment from their automobiles by producing engines that could run on low lead or unleaded gasoline. Two years later GMC was the first to offer an airbag in production. GMC also introduce the most important step in reducing emissions by designing the Cadillac converter. This technology, shared by General Motors, is still in use today in the automobile industry.
Once other countries recovered from WWII such as Germany and Japan, they started producing automobiles that were smaller and received more miles to the gallon. Because of the high production of automobiles, gasoline prices soared and GMC found itself in a challenging position due to the large vehicles they produced that required a higher volume of gasoline. GMC rushed to develop similar smaller cars to compete with the new global competition, but the company had been too successful for too long to change directions easily. Because of this new global competition, GMC began to operate under a single business unit. GMC opened new facilities around the globe under this new reorganization and this sparked GM's largest single production expansion. Concurrently GMC also formed a joint venture with Toyota and Saturn which focused on creating a new small vehicle and a new way of doing business. This new way of doing business was spread throughout GMC domestically and internationally which led the company to once again benefit from its new ideology.
The 1990’s led the way to even greater global expansion with GMC opening markets in countries such as China and Brazil.  GMC still was trying to regain its foothold in North America by designing smaller cars, but the reputation of them building large luxury and less efficient vehicles was still the mindset of North American consumers; this legacy of GMC continue to weigh on their financial results. GMC started to see major growth with the midsize car and a renaissance at Cadillac that is still gaining momentum till this day. All signs of establishing a dominant North American foothold came to a screeching halt during the major recession and global credit crisis. This recession drove car sales near depression levels and dried up private sources of capital. Unfortunately GMC filed for bankruptcy on June 1st of 2009. This marks the rebirth of GMC as GM (General Motors), the US Treasury, Canadian government, and the UAW retired medical benefit trust are its major shareholders.
This new GM is smaller leaner company than its predecessor and now has four major brands in the US; Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. General Motors is now the new redesigned Corporation that currently consists of over 212,012 employees with 369 facilities located on six different continents. Although GM was newly restructured its culture still remained intact. This culture that brought on great innovations that led this...
