GREEN MANUFACTURING AND SUSTAINABILITY AT FRITO-LAY
1. Using resources, regulation and reputation as a basis, what are the sources of pressure on firms such as Frito-lay to reduce their environmental footprint?
The effect of industrialization and the increasing population of humanity are the reasons why natural resources are being overly consumed, outstripping the resource base on an unprecedented scale. The use of resources and subsequently a reduction in operational costs is the primary reason why several companies are going into environmental footprint reduction. Companies like frito-lay, Walmart, Sabaru, Pepsi and Ritz-Carlton would have an increase in OPEX parallel to expansion. ...view middle of the document...
Identify the specific techniques that Frito-Lay is using to become a “green manufacturer.”
a. Green Teams: Frito-lay have set green teams in all their facilities which ensures the highest quality of environmental compliance and awareness.
b. Energy efficient: Eight different Frito-Lay locations currently use solar power to generate electricity. With the solar field in Modesto, California, SunChips multigrain snacks are made with the help of the sun. Frito-Lay’s Killingly, Conn., manufacturing facility implemented a co-generation system, which will generate almost 100 percent of the site’s electricity and help alleviate the congested load on the Northeast power grid
c. Preserving Resources: Frito-Lay reduced its electricity use by 21 percent, natural gas by 33 percent and water by 40 percent for each bag of snacks made. By 2017, the goal is to reduce water use by 75 percent, natural gas by 50 percent and electricity by 45 percent.
d. Reduce and Recycle: 5 million trees a year are saved by reusing and recycling the shipping cartons an average of 10 times each. Frito-Lay pioneered new technologies in packaging with a bag that will fully decompose in about 14 weeks when placed in a hot, active compost heap. The company also has a “zero-landfill” status aiming to reduce significant wastes in order to only send less than 1% of it in landfills. At the Casa Grande, Ariz., plant, the vision is to operate almost entirely on renewable energy sources and recycle approximately 80 percent of its water.
e. Less fuel: More electric trucks are bought by the company to reduce fuel consumption.
f. LEED certification: Several of their sites achieved LEED® Gold status, a certification that recognizes buildings or communities that implement...
