Heroes and Their Monsters
Many heroes have been born or trained throughout the centuries. Most of the heroes are legends from stories or people being in the right spot at the wrong moment and living to tell the tale. Stories have been told around fires about mighty heroes battling against the atrocious monsters. These stories date as far back as 800 B. C. E.
The first of these bodacious heroes was Beowulf and his battles consist of battling against the gruesome Grendel, his seducing mother, and a fire-breathing dragon. Beowulf was a Geatish warrior from Geatland which is now known as Sweden. He was a true warrior who thought he needed to fight any monster that came his way. Beowulf is now fifty years older than when he last battled and when he fights this dragon it is his last for he dies from the dragon’s bite after the dragon is destroyed.
The next hero on topic is Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca. He is the main character of Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. Odysseus is a man but not just any man, a real man who is brave, strong, and loyal and sometimes a little over confident. He is not afraid of what the Gods and Goddesses throw his way even if he was never prepared for what could wrong. Odysseus has many monsters that he encounters on his way home from Troy after the fall of the great city. The trip home that he must journey on takes him a complete decade. The first monster he runs into is not really a monster but a nymph named Calypso. She keeps Odysseus on her island of Ogygia for eight long years because she is lonely. Calypso offers Odysseus the chance to become an immortal because she is very fond of him and she does not want to be lonely ever again.
After Odysseus is able to leave Calypso’s island, he makes his way to another island where he and his crew run into the terrifying Cyclops named Polyphemus. The Cyclops traps Odysseus and his men in the cave where...
