History Of Ipv4 Essay

518 words - 3 pages

The Development of IPv6 started in the 1990s, due to the limitation of IPv4. IPv6 was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force to deal with the long-anticipated problem of IPv4 address exhaustion. IPv4 address exhaustion occurred on February 3, 2011, It had been significantly delayed by address changes such as classfull network design, Classless Inter-Domain Routing, and network address translation. IPv6 is intended to replace IPv4, which still carries the vast majority of Internet traffic as of 2013. IPv6 is a next generation internet protocol which uses 128 bits addressing. IPv6 can hold 340-undecillion, while IPv4 allows 4,294,967,296 unique addresses. IPv6 addresses consist of eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons, an example of an IPv6 address is ...view middle of the document...

IPv4 has different class types: A,B,C,D and E. Class A, Class B, and Class C are the three classes of addresses used on IP networks in common practice. Class D addresses are reserved for multicast. Class E addresses are simply reserved, meaning they should not be used on IP networks (used on a limited basis by some research organizations for experimental purposes). Ipv6 protocols can provide solutions for problems caused by IPv4. IPv6 increases the amount of address space, more efficient routing, reduced management requirement, improved methods to change ISP, better mobility support, and security. In IPv4 Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) manages membership in local subnet groups. While in IPv6 Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) messages manage membership in local subnet groups. Broadcast addresses are used to send traffic to all nodes on a subnet with IPv4, while IPv6 uses a link-local scope all-nodes multicast address. IPv6, does not require manual configuration or DHCP. IPv4 can be configured manually or automatic through DHCP. IPv6 Must support a 1280-byte packet size without fragmentation, IPv4 must support a possibly fragmented 576-byte packet size.IPv4, IPSec ( internet security protocol) is optional and should be supported externally in IPv6 support isn’t optional. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a server service that dynamically assigns, or leases, IP addresses and related IP information to network clients. At first glance, this may not seem like an important task. However, you have to remember that, on a TCP/IP network, each network client must have a unique IP address and an appropriate subnet mask. Without these items, a client cannot communicate on the network. For example, if two clients have the same IP address, neither will be able to communicate on the network.
