In 1957, Shakey’s service companies begin franchising. Opening that year where franchised restaurant in Seattle, Washington, Albany, Oregon, Carmichael, Concord, and Marysville, California. The franchise units also introduced a standard Shakey’s building design. Prior to it, the restaurants have always been located in existing remodeled structures.
Shakey’s began to expand outside the United States with the Opening of a restaurant in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on February 15, 1968. Expansion then went south with the opening of the Mexico City restaurant on May 7, 1968. The first Japanese restaurant opened in Osaka, Japan on July 26, 1973.
Expansion continued with a restaurant in Makati, Philippines in 1975.
Johnson retired in 1967 (at which time there were 272 Shakey’s restaurant across the United States) then sold his half of the company to the Colorado Mining and elevator Company of Denver, Colorado. Sherwood Johnson had started with a total investment of $3,400 and retired thirteen years later as a multi-millionaire.
A year later (1968) CM&E merged with Great Western Sugar Company to from Great western United Corporation. In that year, Plummer also sold his half interest for $10,000,000 to Great Western United Corporation and retired. The chain was then 325 units strong. Hunt International Resources acquired Shakey’s employees who became franchisees, purchased Shakey’s Incorporated in 1984 and in 1989 sold the chain to our current owner Inno-Pacific Ltd., a Singapore-based company.
Today there are over 500 Shakey’s restaurants world-wide. Pizza is still the mainstay at today’s Shakey’s, whether it’s our original thin crust version with it’s crispy, crunchy taste or the classic hand-tossed pizza with dough baked thick and chewy. Shakey’s customers also find a wide spectrum of al carte items including marinated pressure-fried chicken, our exclusive MOJOTM potatoes (French-fried slices in seasoned breeding), pasta, an extensive salad bar and , in most Shakey’s Restaurant in the USA, an elaborate all-you-can-eat buffet.
Control of Shakey’s Incorporated, the United States arm of the restaurant group, was acquired in February 1989 by Singapore-based Inno-Pacific Holding Ltd., a holding management and investment company. In September 1988, Inno-Pacific had purchased a controlling interest in Shakey’s International Ltd., developer of the Shakey’s business in overseas markets.
