As everyone can see technology and education are mixing together, many steps have been taken to get all the useful technology in the right direction for the development of education. The mistaken assumption is that if a student can use the software, he or she is becomes a designer. The student basically is taking the course of least resistance – it is easier to learn software than design. It is also a case where, with no understanding of the software, there will be no projects at all to turn in. In contrast, a student with some measure of understanding of software but having no understanding of the design will still have a project to submit. A student with this case is usually shocked at the bad grades he gets on the project.
What are the positive and negative impacts of educational technology on students, faculty, and staff?
Four main applications that have introduced in educational technology are on-line classes, Internet, research, and presentations.
Many educational organizations provide online classes to students. Different online classes are also available for faculty. The favors done by of online classes are easily provable. The class has come towards us instead of us travelling to the class because of the Internet. Shy students more often participate in online discussions but they hesitate in speaking up in front of the class. The impact of ethnicity, gender, age, and other factors that have a role in communicating face-to-face is decreased.
The biggest disadvantage of an online class is not having the interaction and energy of a person in class. E-mail communication could never have the same effect or produce the same energy as the intercourse in a classroom. Slow feedback from both the students and teachers is discouraging than the quick response in the classes. Because students are wanted to spend same amount of time with the on ground classes as with their online classes, exchanging ideas and class discussions are replaced with writing papers and reading assignments.
Computers and the Internet are the biggest discovery in education technology. The Internet as a computer based educational technology also has a tremendous impact. How information and projects are transmitted back and forth between teachers and students and has been substantially impacted in a positive way. Negative aspects include students who get the emails from their teacher yet claims that they didn’t received it.
Much software like PowerPoint allows a teacher to create his or her own presentations quickly. After a teacher gains some experience on PowerPoint, presentations are made very easily. The only negative impact of presentations made by current technology, that I know, is how it is being used. PowerPoint presentations are so simple to make that some teachers are trying to use them as a script for themselves. Simply reading the text of each slide without adding any information or discussing it creates an environment that is more encouraging to sleeping rather than participating in the class.
