Dalam meningkatkan daya saing, pola kompetisi mulai berubah dari persaingan antar perusahaan menjadi persaingan antar supply chain. Dalam Supply Chain Management (SCM) mengalir sejumlah material dan barang, informasi, dan jasa. Informasi merupakan salah satu hal penting dalam berjalannya supply chain management yang efektif. Supply chain management didefinisikan oleh Simchi, Levi (2000) sebagai suatu kumpulan pendekatan yang digunakan untuk mengintegrasikan secara efisien antara pemasok, perusahaan manufaktur, pergudangan, dan toko, sehingga barang diproduksi dan didistribusikan dengan kuantitas yang tepat, lokasi tepat, dan waktu yang tepat, untuk meminimumkan biaya-biaya pada kondisi yang memuaskan kebutuhan tingkat pelayanan.
Salah satu aspek penting dalam supply chain management selain barang dan uang adalah informasi. Aliran informasi dalam supply chain terjadi dari hulu ke hilir maupun sebaliknya. Informasi menjadi dasar bagi manajer untuk mengambil keputusan. Berbagai macam informasi yang diperlukan seorang manajer misalnya jumlah permintaan barang, ketersediaan material, harga material, stok barang digudang, dsb. Informasi yang mengalir di intern perusahaan maupun antar supply chain menjadi suatu data berharga bagi kelangsungan hidup suatu supply chain.
Perkembangan teknologi informasi memungkinkan perusahaan untuk membangun dan memelihara organisasi yang fleksibel yang mampu merespon secara cepat pada perubahan kondisi dan permintaan (Lee et al., 2001). Selain meningkatkan efisiensi supply chain, teknologi informasi, yang mencakup perangkat lunak, perangkat keras dan jaringan, dapat melancarkan aliran informasi dan memudahkan pengambilan keputusan pada supply chain dan manajemen logistik (Sundarakani et al., 2012) Penulisan ini akan menjelaskan mengenai peran teknologi informasi dalam supply chain dengan memaparkan contoh perusahaan.

2. Supply Chain pada PT Coca Cola Amatil Indonesia
2.1 Gambaran umum PT Coca Cola Amatil Indonesia
Coca cola diperkenalkan di Indonesia pada tahun 1927 dan resmi diproduksi pada tahun 1932. Setelah sempat ditutup pada 1942, Coca cola memulai kembali kegiatan produksinya oleh Indonesia Bottler Limited (IBL), perusahaan nasional yang didirikan oleh TH Ticoalu, Tatan Nana dan Harry Handoyo. Pada saat itu pabrik Coca cola memproduksi 1000-1500 kotak Coca cola per hari, memperkerjakan 25 orang dan didukung oleh 3-7 truk distribusi. Sejak 1960-an, beberapa produk PT Coca cola Company telah diperkenalkan di pasar Indonesia. Dan ditahun 2000, 10 operasional pembotolan bergabung dibawah Coca Cola Amatil Indonesia.
Coca cola Amatil Indonesia (CCAI) telah beroperasi di Indonesia sejak 1992 dengan menyediakan bemacam varian produk perusahaan, termasuk air kemasan botol. CCAI melakukan produksi dan distribusi dibawah lisensi merek dagang dari Coca cola Company. CCAI memiliki dan mengoperasikan 9 pabrik pembotolan diantaranya di Cibitung, Cikedokan, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Bali, Medan, Padang, dan Lampung, serta mengoperasikan lebih dari 100 distribution centers diseluruh Indonesia. Untuk memperoleh bahan baku, CCAI memiliki lebih dari 2.500 supplier didalam supply chain-nya.
