Society’s view on normal and abnormal behavior is constantly changing. What one person views as normal another will view it as abnormal. Normal or abnormal behavior may be determined by social or cultural context. What a person does in one country may be completely abnormal in another country. Society may have its own version of the standards of normal but the mental health professional has to determine and define abnormal behavior and determine if the abnormal behavior will constitute as a mental disorder. 3. Irrationality: The person will act or talk in ways that will be irrational or incomprehensible for others to understand.
4. Unpredictability: The individual will behave erratically and inconsistently at different times or from one situation to another, as if experiencing a loss of control.
5. Unconventionality and undesirable behavior: The person will behave in a way that is statistically rare and violate the social norms of what is legal or morally acceptable or desirable by others.
The more prevalent and extreme the indicators are will give the psychologist a better view on identifying an abnormal condition. There are more than 300 recognized mental disorders (Zimbardo, Johnson, & McCann, Vivian. (2009, 2006, 2003, 2000).
