As I went through this class this semester we discussed things from Time Management Skills, to Plagiarism, from identifying Personal Learning styles to using sources in a paper. I was reminded that even academically I need to set achievable goals to achieve bigger goals. Doing this will lead to much better success, and will help in my success in my career as I carry on the same routine there. So as I took this class I came up with a few educational goals, two of those goals were to graduate with a total Grade Point Average of 3.5, and to do my best to graduate a semester early. Not to mention the use of abbreviations, failing to use capitalization and punctuation is extremely informal and does not translate well to the professional arena.
Critical thinking is an important skill that you will need to succeed in life. Being able to think critically will make you a better student. Having good critical thinking skills is not only helpful in school, but in all aspects of your life. Being a good critical thinker will also help you in the workplace. I came up with a few things that I can do to better my critical thinking academically as well as in life. First I need to be sure that I have all the pertinent information that I need to make the best decision. Because before you can choose a course of action or make a judgment about any issue, you need to gather sufficient information to make sense of the problem. I need to do better at considering what I already know and what other pieces of the puzzle are missing. Next I need to be more flexible or open-minded, because I tend to be a bit more closed minded on certain things. I need to do better at considering whether I am looking at a problem based on my belief system or based on actual information. I need to be willing to entertain new information even when it contradicts my own beliefs. And that leads to my next piece, which is considering alternatives. Even the same set of information can carry with it the possibility of different options. I can use a variety of techniques to generate even more ideas. When I have a number of alternatives, I can decide on a better solution. And lastly I need to get better at organizing my thoughts. I need to get better at figuring out the relationships among the bits of information I collect. I need to be able to better examine what information has high value and what is of little importance.
The one resource I plan on using throughout my classes at this university, is the center for writing excellence. This tool can be used for a wide range of things such as grammar help and plagiarism checker, as well as, help with paper writing guidelines. The challenges of working with outside sources are that they are not always open so you don’t always get the help you need. There are other challenges, like that some of these outside sources cost money and have inflexible hours. One thing that I have paid extra attention to is that of academic integrity. Academic Integrity simply means honesty or responsibility. I believe absolute integrity is expected of every student in all academic endeavors, in every college. Integrity entails a firm devotion to a set of values, and the values most essential to an academic community are grounded on the concept of honesty with respect to the scholarly efforts of oneself and others. It’s my opinion that academic integrity is expected not only in formal coursework situations, but in all University relationships and interactions connected to the educational process. I also took time to really sit...
