APSS292 Chinese Politics (Spring 2014) The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Mid-term Assignment

Instructor: Dr. M. Pong

Write a 400-word paper (double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, one-inch margins) relating a recent newspaper article to a topic discussed in the course so far. In the paper, please address the following three questions: 1) How does the article relate to Chinese politics? 2) How does the content of the article relate to the information found in the readings for this course? For example: • Does it provide evidence that supports what was in the readings or that counters it? • Does it provide an example of something mentioned in the reading? 3) What does this ultimately tell us – what broader implications does it have and why is it important? Guidelines: 1. You are not permitted to choose an article focused on a topic from ...view middle of the document...

3. The newspaper article you choose should be from within the past year. It should be a main article of substantive length. If you are unsure about whether or not your article is long enough, please check with me. 4. The paper should be submitted to me by email in a Word document (.doc format). Along with your assignment, please also attach the newspaper article used in a separate file. a. If the article is available online, please copy and paste it into a separate Word document to attach to the email. At the end of this document, provide the link to the specific website where the article was retrieved. b. If the article is not available online, please scan a copy of it and submit it electronically with your assignment (as a PDF file). When you scan it, make sure that the name of the newspaper, the date of publication, and the section and page number are also scanned (not handwritten). 5. The paper should be well-structured and clearly written. It should illustrate some analysis of the article’s content (rather than being purely descriptive) and demonstrate critical thinking and creativity when relating it to the reading(s) and to broader issues in Chinese politics. This will help you in preparation for writing your term papers. Note: You are permitted to use two different newspaper articles on the topic you have chosen if you find that a comparison of the articles would strengthen your analysis. 6. You should relate your newspaper article to at least one or two readings from the syllabus (essential and/or further readings are acceptable, though you are encouraged to start with the essential readings). Make sure to list the reading(s) at the end of your paper using a commonly accepted style such as Harvard, MLA, Chicago, or APA. 7. The assignment must be researched and written individually. Deadline: The paper must be submitted by email no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 (of Week 8).
