College education: large university or small college?
Having a college degree today is an asset when applying for a decent job. Higher education is very expensive; it is a hard decision for parents and students when it comes to chose whether they will attend a large university or a small college. A large university and a small college have the same goals which are to educate, train, and develop students in their different fields, but they are also different in terms of class size, quality of teachers and tuition cost. It is important to have a good look at these different factors in order to chose between a large university and a small college when deciding what is the best for a student.
According to a recent study, the average number of students per class in some large universities is around 400 to 500 students per class. Students always argue that the atmosphere inside the classroom is very good. They have the opportunity to exchange ideas ...view middle of the document...
There are more professors with more experience that teach at large universities than in small colleges. This is advantage for students to be taught by someone who knows what he or she is talking about. The problem with large universities is that they have graduate programs and most of the time grad students are the ones teaching. It gives time to some professors do their research, or lap experiences. On the other hand, in small college, all the teaching is done by professors, who have time to focus on their job. For example, it will be very difficult to receive a feedback or a suggestion on a paper if you attend a large university while in a small college, you will have the opportunity to receive a individual feedback and you are allowed to write more than one paper.
The difference between college and university costs is that the fees you pay for the program you will take at a large university might be the double of what you are supposed to pay if you go to a college. When paying your tuition fees at the university you can expect to pay one or two more additional fees for students’ activities and considering that fees can go up before you finish your program. For instance, if you pay $3000 each year at college, expect to pay $6500 at the university. That is why it is important to figure out your finances before deciding where you want to achieve your program of study.
Even though both large university and small college have the same goals which are to educate, it is important to mention that they have different ways for reaching these goals. Some students think that the class size matters, that when it is a small class, teacher take care of all students; others think that best teachers are at the university; almost everybody agrees that higher education is a significant cost no matter whether you attend large university or small college. Obtaining a degree from a large or a small university is a personal choice. It is important to choose a school based on your financial situation and based on the environment where you feel most comfortable.
