DOES THE MANAGEMENT NEED TO SET UP VIRTUAL AND WHY?
The Lanx Company, a textile manufacturing firm currently based in the UK after months of deliberation, research and market survey decided to launch another branch in Delhi, India. The parent company based in the UK has recorded significant financial successes with a strong capital base and as part of ensuring continuous growth, has decided to expand its operation beyond the markets in UK.

The managers are expected to act as role models for the new employees and other categories of staff that will be living in India, according to (Kayworth & Leinder cited Wade et al - pp 13). The Managers that will be relocating from UK were also selected based on their performance and overall competency around managing a diverse workforce. Additional training on diversity management will be provided to managers who have limited knowledge in dealing with a diverse group.

The setting up of a new plant by the company in India requires that some of the employees will relocate to India while some of the members of the team members will still be in UK. Virtual team is a group of people who work and collaborate on a project using electronic communication devices (Symons &Stenzel,2007). The team members of the virtual team maybe in the same or different locations around the globe. The virtual team therefore provides an avenue for collaboration at project levels for the different team members residing in different countries. The virtual tool will also be harnessed by the top management team based in UK to discuss day to day issues with the employees that have been relocated to India. The advantages of setting up a virtual team include saving cost of renting of offices and transporting the employees to and fro the different locations. There is also the flexibility for workers to choose their work schedule thus striking a balance between professional and personal lives. Virtual teams are set up for long and short term purposes because it will optimize resources in human skills and office accommodation. Through setting up of communication outlet through enabling technologies like teleconferences, employees can collaborate and work on a project irrespective of differences in time zone and diverse location. Working with cultural diverse virtual team increases productivity because of innovation they bring to the table. Management should employ strategies that can effectively manage the virtual team. Although virtual teams have obvious advantages there are some problems that are also associated with setting a virtual team.

The virtual team provides a viable option to enable the Lanx management to cut down on cost of relocation of all staffs required to work on the projects in India. Employees can work effectively and manage their various roles from their different locations with use of some technology enabling tools that will enhance communication and training.

Managers and team leaders must strive to establish and build trust amongst team members and encourage through the use of effective tools to enhance communication among members.
