Soc 492 Leadership Final Reflection Paper

During this semester I learned so much more about myself in relation to leadership. In the beginning of the semester we took a ‘Leadership Self-Assessment- Readiness for the Leadership Role’ and I scored a 68, which meant I had a moderate readiness for the leadership role. Now at the end of the semester I feel like I would score more close to 100 and have a high readiness for the leadership role. I have learned how to deal with toxic leaders, how to identify them, and how to better handle them in certain situations. I’ve also learned that I can lead meetings and group discussions through our practicing leadership and reading facilitation roles. ...view middle of the document...

Two things I think leaders need to improve on are having a close connection with their followers and avoid being toxic leaders. My reading facilitation was on Truth 5—You can’t do it all alone, which began with a quote by food scientist Elaine Fan, who says in order to be an effective leader, “you must understand the needs of your followers.” In order to understand these needs you must begin by establishing a close primal connection with your followers. A leader must be sensitive to peoples needs and be aware of their feelings, they have to actually listen to the people and have a clear understanding of the perspective of others. To build a connection with others, I learned, leaders have to talk to people in a language that they understand, attend to their needs and focus on the capabilities, and include the people in the picture they are making. To avoid being a toxic leader, leaders should pay attention to the way they communicate with others and the language they use when asking for things. A simple please and thank before and after a task goes a long way. Holding toxic leaders accountable to admitting they make mistakes too. A Harvard professor once quoted, “Leaders who cannot confront their own mistakes… are probably not leaders we can trust with decisions that affect our lives”. At times, when individuals start to realize they hold certain positions of high power they begin to act differently and think themselves differently as their followers. It is important to remember to remain humble about your position and treat everyone the same, no matter what position they are in. My dad always told me to greet the janitor the same way I greeted the principle. The type of leader you can count me to be for your company is an authentic leader. I will be the type of leader that will pursuit a purpose with passion, practice solid values, lead will my heart as well as with my head, establish connection with others, and demonstrate self-discipline.
3 things I like most about the class assignments, readings, and activities are that we got to practice leadership, understand which areas we need improvement on, and go to learn more about our fellow peers. Not only did we get to learn about leadership but we also had the opportunity to put it to practice. Through reading facilitation we lead the class into class discussions, through our practicing leadership assignment I got to open up the class and dive into the lesson plan, and through our team...
