Bilbao (2007) cited that, teaching multigrade classes is not only hard work; it also entails knowledge and skills in performing the task. The pre-service training of the teacher did not provide for teaching strategies and methodologies in multigrade teaching. In addition, Pascua (2011) said that a multigrade classroom involves children with different skills, abilities, different mental levels and needs and the diverse background of the pupils. Also to be taken into consideration is the status of facilities in the classroom and the instructional materials designed for multigrade teaching that would make the teaching and learning easy for both the teacher and the pupils.
In this connection, DepEd Order No. 63,s.2010 enhanced DepEd Order No.81, s.2009 known as “Strengthening the Implementation of the Multigrade Education Program in the Philippine Education” through the provision of financial assistance for multigrade teachers’ training. It has been proven that MG classes given appropriate interventions, and teachers provided with materials and appropriate training on effective teaching approaches, can perform in accordance to standards. A study conducted by the University of the Philippines in 2004-2005 revealed that there is generally no difference between the pupils from MG schools and pupils from monograde classes in terms of academic performance.
The researcher who is a MG teacher has find many challenges in teaching MG classes and is interested and curious in determining the level of effectiveness in MG teaching in the Division Of Lanao del Norte.
