The role of a manager can be one of the most challenging jobs ever in existence. A manager’s role is to perform within the functional areas of a business. A business has different components that make up the organization; these are usually Finance and Accounting, Research and Development, Sales and Marketing, Production, Human Resources, IT, and Distribution. Planning is the first function of the four functions of management. Robbins and Coulter (2012) defined Planning as a “Management function that involves setting goals, establishing strategies for achieving those goals, and developing plans to integrate and coordinate activities” (p. 9). A successful manager has to plan within all the different components of a business in order to be successful. As managers engage in planning, they


set goals, establish strategies for achieving those goals, and develop plans to integrate and coordinate activities (Robbins & Coulter, 2012).

Robbins and Coulter (2012) stated that “When managers organize, they determine what tasks are to be done, who is to do them, how the tasks are to be grouped, who reports to whom, and where decisions are to be made” (p. 9). Organizing is the second function of management. Robbins and Coulter (2012) defined Organizing as a “Management function that involves arranging and structuring work to accomplish the organization’s goals” (p. 9). This function can make or break a manager. If a manager cannot organize effectively he or she will not lead correctly. Organizing and leading go hand and hand. Every organization has people, and a manager’s job is to work with and through people to accomplish goals. This is the leading function (Robbins & Coulter, 2012). The leading function is so important, in my experience, I have physically seen district managers force a General Manager to step down because of lack of leadership skills. The function of leading can drive employees to success or to failure. When managers motivate subordinates, help resolve work group conflicts,
