By Hal Walls Human resource development professionals say that good managers must be good actors. This concept may inspire images of ambitious managers playing out roles and engaging in acts of utter insincerity for completely selfish reasons. The concept of acting as managing, however, has some merit if we consider what professional actors refer to as honesty in their profession. If an actor can internalize the role and actually think the thoughts and feel the feelings of the character, then the resulting performance carries a certain authenticity that can have a powerful effect on the audience. It is an honest portrayal, even though it is fictitious. In the same spirit, managers can reveal some of their private thoughts and feelings to their associates and may even exaggerate the emotional content of those messages in order to make a point. I have seen managers shout, cry, spit, laugh hysterically, trip over furniture, and physically intimidate associates and get away with it.
