Describe the context of your research
The organisation that I will be investigating and solving the problem of lack of motivation will be Woolworths. Woolworths is in the retail sector and is part of the duopoly which is dominating the Grocery market. There are 864 supermarkets with 175,000 employees Australia wide, although due to time and money constraints this report will focus on Woolworths in Victoria Point.
The industry that Woolworths currently falls in is the retail industry and in particular food and beverage. Employees of the retail sector are the second lowest paid employees in Australia according to the Australia Bureau of Statistics with the average annual earnings of $50,430 this can be seen below.

The low annual income of the retail sector could have a huge impact on employee motivation, as discusses in the journal article by Carolyn Stringer “no other incentive or motivational technique comes close to money” this statement show how important money is to employee motivation especially extrinsic motivation.
Another problem with Woolworths that is having a huge impact on employee motivation is the organisational culture. The culture at Woolworths in Victoria Point which would be similar throughout all stores is shocking; there is a constant push from senior management to increase profits for shareholders and Woolworths is doing this by cutting wages. There are other ways to increase profits instead of reducing costs and cutting wages. To improve the organisational culture and motivation levels this management strategy needs to be evaluated.
The research problem which will be analysed and investigated is “What is the most effective way to motivate employees in Woolworths to increase productivity and job satisfaction?”This question will provide the basis for all interview questions and research of literature. To solve this problem to increase motivation in Woolworths, surveys will be handed out to employees and literature will be researched and adapted to solve this problem.

When looking at the research problem of how to increase motivation and job satisfaction, it is crucial to evaluate the different management methods to determine which would be the most successful in this situation. Furthermore it is imperative to understand the different types of motivations and what drives individuals to work effectively and what aspects influence job satisfaction. There are many researches that have looked in to this area of motivation although it is important to understand what motivates employees in the current situation and which methods would be most suited to Woolworths. Another aspect that needs to be evaluated is what causes employee satisfaction; workers might be motivated to work although this does not mean they are satisfied with their job.
