In recent years, there has been an increase in absenteeism and employee turnover. An investigation, by the HR Manager, found that employees often cited ill-health due stress and long-working hours as the main reason for absenteeism. Employees, especially those with families, found that the shift patterns of Mercer were not flexible enough to allow sufficient time with their families. This is one of the major contributors to the high level of employee turnover.

Mercer decisions to expansion its operation by exporting its products to Europe means that the organisation has had to realign its business strategy. This has resulted in an extension of the factory opening hours in order for the company to meet demand. In addition, changes in government regulation in over the last 30 years have led the company to re-evaluate its approach to human resource management.


Task 1

Using Guest and Storey’s models of HRM compare the difference between human resource management and personnel and industrial relations practices. Discuss the implication, to line mangers, employees and senior management, of Mercer adapting a strategic approach to human resource management. LO1

Task 2

Mercer acknowledged that in order address some of the employee issues that they must consider a more flexible approach to work. LO2

a) Discuss the different approach to flexibility Mercer can adapt to meet both its employee needs and business commitment.

b) Using the core/peripheral model of flexibility explain how work flexibility may be apply in practice. What are the advantage of adapting flexible working to the management and employees of Mercer?

c) Discuss the current changes in the labour market and explain how these changes affect flexible working patterns.

Task 3

Discuss the different types of discrimination that can take place within the workplace and critically examine the implication of equal opportunities legislations for Mercer. Explain how managing diversity differs from equal opportunity. LO3

Task 4

a) Compare and contrast the different approach to performance management. Which approach would to recommend to Mercer?

b) Mercer has experience a high level of employee absenteeism and turnover, often due to ill health or family pressures. Examine how the organisation can address these issues.

c) Briefly explain the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and discuss the implication of this on Mercer human resource practice. LO4
