Educating Special Needs Students
Identifying and providing for special needs children is essential to special education. Once a child has been diagnosis with a disability or multiple disabilities, a plan of care is initiated according to the severity of their condition and their needs. This plan is individualized; one child’s diagnosis is not a reflection of the wide range conditions that affect many children. Children with intellectual disabilities, rather mild or sever, will definitely experience some problems in education. The impact or the problem will depend on the extent of the extent of the disability. Mild intellectual disability is characterized with general problems of learning and functioning socially as other disabilities. However, it is known as the highest level of performance with intellectual disabilities and can usually function independently with little to no assistance. (Hardman, Drew, & Egan, 2013). Of course, the extent of the impact on education will be more problematic as the severity increase.
Severe disability is define as, “disabilities that involve significant physical, sensory, intellectual, and/or social-interpersonal performance deficits.” (Hardman, Drew, & Egan, 2013).
Rather the cause is medical, environmental or genetic, life is going to be more difficult and their needs cannot be met by only one professional. (Hardman, Drew, & Egan, 2013). Students with severe disabilities can be characterized by different traits: limited speech or communication, limited physical mobility, trouble remembering skills needed for everyday life. (NICHCY, 2004). Their needs are extensive; medical, psychological, social, and academic, thus the impact on education is meticulous. Students with multiple disabilities can also be labeled as severely disabled. According the IDEA federal regulations multiple disabilities means “related impairments (such as mental retardation-blindness or mental retardation-orthopedic impairment), the combination of severe disabilities which causes such severe educational needs that they cannot be accommodated in special education programs exclusively for one of the impairments.” (Ed.gov, n.d.). Multiple disabilities results from multiple causes because of the different conditions. Like students with a single severe disability, students with multiple disabilities require an extensive well integrated curriculum requiring the assistance from many disciplines (such as speech therapist, physical therapist). Although, multiple disabilities can be more complex it is not the most complex disability.
Autism is labeled among the most complicated, complex disability. Autism is defined as “a pervasive developmental disorder with onset prior to age 3, characterized by qualitatively impaired social interactive and social communicative skills along with restricted and repetitive repertoire of behavior, interests, and activities.” (Hardman, Drew, & Egan, 2013). No particular cause has been linked to autism, however it has been established that abnormalities in brain structure and function is a general explanation. (Autism Society, n.d).
