Comparing Nutrition Labels
Nutrition labels are intended to help people make healthier choices when it comes to the food they eat. Consumers recognize nutrition labels as tools to help improve their health and can find an abundance of valuable information pertaining to specific items. The presence of nutritional information may influence the consumer to switch from unhealthy food products towards healthy food products, but only if they understand how to read a nutrition label. Many Americans consume more calories than they need without meeting recommended intakes for a number of nutrients. When consuming calories it is important that you refer back to the serving size so you are able to calculate your caloric intake based on the number of servings you consumed. An avocado, for example, has 50 calories, 35 of them being fat calories. Although it is usually categorized as unhealthy to eat something that is more than 1/3 fat calories, an avocado contains both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Each of these provides essential fats that the body is unable to produce on its own such as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. In comparison to the ice cream, Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey is 300 calories, 160 of them being fat calories, in this case unlike the avocado, ice cream contains only saturated fat (10g). A diet high in saturated fat raises the level of cholesterol in your blood. Food with high levels of saturated fat can also be high in calories.
Another component that is important to focus on when deciding whether or not to eat a particular food is the nutrients. Sodium and cholesterol in large amounts can increase the risk of certain chronic diseases, such as heart disease, some cancers, or high blood pressure. When looking at the nutrition label for the avocado there is 0mg of both cholesterol and sodium, making this fruit even healthier to eat! Unlike the avocado the ice cream has 65mg of cholesterol and 35mg of sodium. With the ice cream having little nutritional value it is important to watch both your sodium and cholesterol in the effort of preventing long term effects to the body.
When looking at a food label we must also take into consideration the amount of protein we are getting from the particular food being consumed. Protein is an essential nutrient which helps form the structural component of the body tissues and is used within many biological processes. It works to keep the body active, strong, and healthy. When comparing the amount of protein in an avocado to the protein found in ice cream, ice cream has 4g whereas an avocado has 0g. Although an avocado has 0g of protein it contains all the essential vitamins and minerals to make proteins. With the amount of calories in the Ben and Jerry’s ice cream the amount of protein provided in each serving is very low.
Most American’s don’t get enough dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, and iron in their own diet. Eating enough of these nutrients can improve your health and help reduce the risk of some...
