Virtually every aspect of life is affected at least indirectly by some type of organization. We look to organizations to feed, clothe, house, educate, and employ us. An organization is a system of consciously coordinated activities or forces of two or more persons. Modern organizations have one thing in common: they are the primary context for organizational behavior. In a manner of speaking, organizations are the chessboard upon which the game of organizational behavior is played. Therefore, present and future managers need a working knowledge of modern organizations to improve their chances of making the right moves when managing people at work (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2009). ...view middle of the document...

The most common type of diversity within an organization is cultural diversity. Cultural diversity involves the differences in the composition of members of an organization in terms of nationality, race, color, gender, creed, religion, or age (Merchant, P., 2011). A typical organization has an extensive range of people who have cultural and personal differences. Acknowledging diverse cultures enables the organization to positively influence the organizational behavior that, in turn, enhances the performance and image of the organization (Merchant, P., 2011). The positive influence of cultural diversity facilitates members of the organization to build relationships and acknowledge each other regardless of their differences of origin and background (Merchant, P., 2011).
As an example of cultural diversity, I will use my organization, Electrolux Major Appliance. In a call center environment, it is common to find different races working together. At EMA, there are multiple races represented, such as Black, White, Asian, and Hispanic. Having a diverse group of employees is a good way to show you are equal opportunity employer. The goal of the equal employment opportunity (EEO) legislation is to outlaw discrimination and to encourage organizations to proactively prevent discrimination. Organizations cannot discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, physical and mental disabilities and pregnancy (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2009). In some areas, Spanish is spoken just as much as English, so many organizations, including EMA, are recruiting bi-lingual employees. Not only does this show your diversity, but it shows your devotion to your consumers.
Leaders are able to fix the issue of diversity within an organization. Diversity influences the way individuals behave. The patterns of behavior in the organization are influenced by the nature of interactions and degree of diversity within the organization. The business should seek to create an organizational culture that not only enhances the diversity of its workforce, but also boosts individual performance. The positive influences of cultural diversity not only enable the organization to increase the scope of its reach, but the business also receives favorable exposure from every sector of the population due to its multicultural approach (Merchant, P., 2011). Managing diversity enables people to perform up to their maximum potential. It focuses on changing an organization’s culture and infrastructure such that people provide the highest productivity possible (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2009).
