The topic that I chose for my organizational behavior project was managing stress and the work-life balance. I chose this topic after doing the wheel of life project in class. When I did that activity I was amazed to see how far off my work-life balance was. From what my ideal wheel of life looked like compared to my actual wheel of life they were way opposite from each other. There were some other students around me that had similar appearances but not quite as drastic as mine was. So after that activity I decided that I would look into other’s work-life balance and how they manage stress. To narrow my results I chose to look at others in the same profession that I am in, nursing.
To research this topic I talked or interviewed other nurses including co-workers and other classmates, I handed out a brief five question survey and a wheel of life activity for them to fill out and return to me and I also used the text for ways to improve work-life balance and reduce stress. ...view middle of the document...
On a 0-10 scale what is your average stress level? On average how many hours a week do you work or go to school? How many hours a week on average do you get to spend time with your family or doing something you enjoy? Are you satisfied with your current work-life balance? What is one thing that you could do to help lower your stress levels? The nurses I gave surveys to were random ranging from all ages, people in school, others with children, part-time and full time nurses.
I collected the data I received and took the average score for all of the questions. I then used the text to look up things the nurses could do to improve their work-life balance and lower their stress levels. I also used the text to find out what the organization could do for the nurses that would help the nurses have more time for their personal lives and to help reduce stress. Some of the things I found were; exercise, relaxation, time management, work schedule, work design, stress management programs, and health promotion programs. This helped me learn that my career is one with a high stress level and that others are facing the same issues. I also learned some coping strategies that I could try to help improve my stress level and my work-life balance. I also looked into what programs were already being offered to employees by the organization. I found that there is an employee assistance program in place and also as an employee you receive 3 free counseling sessions.
For documentation I collected the surveys and took notes about my conversations with other nurses. I also took notes from what I read from the text.
If I were to give myself an evaluation grade for my OB project I would give myself 75/80. I feel like my topic was relevant to organizational behavior, creative, and that I chose an appropriate way to research my topic. I also think that how I presented the information was appropriate, it explained what I did, why I did it and showed what I learned from my research and results from others. If I were going to do this project again I would try to obtain more surveys so I could get a better average of the questions I asked. I would also make sure that the employees knew about the employee assistance program so they could receive help if they chose. Overall I am happy with my project and I believe I put good time and effort into creating it.
