The dictionary defines responsibility as an obligation to carry forward an assigned task to a successful conclusion. The quality or state of being responsible: as moral, legal, reliable, trustworthy, and mentally accountable. Personal responsibility is the willingness to both accept the importance of standards that society establishes for individual behavior and to make strenuous personal efforts to live by those standards.

I will be the first to admit that I have been guilty of feeling sorry for myself when things didn’t go quite right. This is when I have to step back and eventually realize that my successes have usually come when I took responsibility and was solely accountable.
As with our everyday lives, responsibility is very important to our college success. Our instructor gives us, or directs us to the tools we need to succeed; a syllabus, assignments, and reading being just some of those tools. They want us to independently or in teams apply new learning, manage our time effectively, and build confidence in our understanding and application of information. The completion of assigned tasks will demonstrate our effective study skills and is a very important measure of personal responsibility.
So to summarize, if we understand that we are solely responsible for our choices in our everyday lives as well as in college, that we choose the direction for our life, we don’t put blame elsewhere, we accept the consequences for our actions and decisions, are willing to admit when we are wrong or make a mistake, and take an honest inventory of our strengths/weaknesses, abilities, values, morals, and ethical perspective, we will fully understand the term responsibility and be on track for success both in our everyday lives and in college.
