African Americans seem to fall below regarding political, social and economic standings. Economically, their income has improved over the past fifty years. They now report a median income of what White men were making 50 years ago. In 2009, the median income for Blacks was $32584, and for Whites it was $54461.00. (Schaefer, 2012) As much as the income has increased for African Americans, it has also increased for White men. That suggests they are still the less than race. What is racism? In what ways does racism affect diversity?
Racism is explained as a belief that one’s race is superior over another. In our country, diversity is to be expected, there are many different people who have migrated here over the years. Diversity means there are many races or cultures present. These should be respected. Racism hinders the process of tolerance. Racism leads to prejudice and discrimination, this is not consistent with diversity. When one feels they are superior to another, they do not associate or mingle with the other races. This can lead to segregation once again and away from diversity.
How do racial Groups interact in contemporary America? Are interactions positive, negative or neutral?
It is difficult to label the interaction among different races as positive, negative or neutral. The interaction can be either or both. Through the generations, we have received education that tells us in our head that equality and fairness are imminent. (Mills, 2009) There are some that have been raised differently, and though they know the proper attitude to exhibit, internally they struggle with their true emotions. This can result in a positive interaction, but a negative experience. Our society has grown more tolerant and there are likely more positive experiences. Then there are gangs. This always leads to negative interactions.
