“Walk This Way” to “The Show Goes On”: The Progression of Rap

Compared to other genres of music, rap is considered to be pretty new. Rap, or hip-hop, is constantly evolving, as do other types of music. Rap is simply described as, “talking in rhyme to the rhythm of a beat” (Hip Hop). When rap was getting started, it only consisted of DJs mixing some beats together along with beat boxing and sampling other songs. As the years went on, people decided to rap over the beats and create a perfect rap song. Some rappers are lyrical geniuses, while others make music purely for a good party song. The radio does not do a good job of playing a variety of rap, now a days mainstream rap that is ...view middle of the document...

Along with the positive aspects to the new rap sensation, there were obviously negatives because of the violent lyrics.
Biggie Smalls and Tupac became very popular around 1994. Biggie Smalls grew up in Brooklyn, New York while Tupac grew up in Oakland, California. The two rappers were both “game changers” because they were both very talented and influenced the new type of rap that was considered gangsta rap, or underground rap. While some would think rap is just another type of music, it is more than that. Sims emphasizes that fact by suggesting, “Hip-hop started in the streets and subways of The Bronx, but it has since spread across the world. It became more than just about the music. It was a lifestyle” (Sims). What made Tupac and Biggie Small even better known in society was the East coast vs. West coast rivalry. It was a bitter war between the West and East, which resulted in both of the rappers getting shot and dying while they were in their prime. There was so much controversy over the shootings, and still to this day, there are conspiracies to both deaths. The war between Tupac and Biggie Smalls had a huge impact on culture, there was even a movie made about it. Some people would argue that Biggie Smalls was the best rapper alive, and the same thing could be said about Tupac. Without these two big name rappers and the huge war between them, one can only take a guess of what the music would be like today.
In the past ten years, rap has seen its ups and downs but still progressing with every artist that succeed in trying to do something new. There are many unique artists, which makes it hard to keep a single genre of rap. Most recently, many artists are rapping over “dubstep” beats, which are hard techno beats. Jody Rosen observes the change in the genre by stating, “as hip-hop has entered its fourth decade, the process of historical investigation and canon-making has swung into high gear” (Rosen). The present day rappers are trying to do anything...
