According to OnCampus research done by Student Watch 2010, 74% of students still prefer printed textbooks and 60% are not sure if such technology is available on their campus. Students are taught in secondary education to use textbooks therefore it gives them the mental context for learning as being using textbooks.
Still in order to keep materials more affordable digital resources will play a big role in the future of education. With nearly all of the textbooks published by McGraw-Hill being available digitally companies are willing to offer materials anyway the market demands. With the vast variety of ways tablet computers can be used for learning the transition will come sooner than later. The idea of colleges and universities becoming paperless and providing students with course syllabus assignments and other requirements online will just be a matter of people moving into it.
In conclusion, the introduction of new technology has brought us into a digital age. The question of whether students prefer online textbooks and materials as opposed to printed textbooks and materials remains to be seen. While some students have embraced the idea of paperless learning others are still accustomed to more the traditional ways of learning thereby creating a market that sees this a less than viable option for now.
