As a child attending grade school in the 90’s and early 2000’s, I have seen the growth and change of the use of technology in education. The first time I could remember using a computer in school was maybe in the first or second grade. We would go to the computer lab once a week and we only utilized it for learning how to type and to play Oregon Trail. I cannot say that I was very enthused about computer lab at this age; I would have much rather been in P.E. or Art class. Continuing on into middle school, I utilized the Internet to help research topics for projects, but I was still an avid reader and loved going to the library and checking out books. I have witnessed children who are socially withdrawn and dependent on technology, whether it’s video games, Internet, or social media. They sit for hours and play MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games), where they are able to interact with other players through a virtual world. They sit behind a computer screen or cell phone and chat with others via Facebook and Instagram, but have no idea how to interact with the real world.
