Technology and Health Care Grading Criteria: Telemedicine
Telemedicine: is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient’s clinical health status. Telemedicine is the tool for the twenty-first century. As the health care profession evolves the continued success of health care practice depends on servicing the patient base in ways that are convenient and cost effective. The doctors are able to monitor the patient whenever needed. This includes home telehealth, uses devices to remotely collect and send data to a home health agency or a remote diagnostic testing facility for interpretation. Such applications might include a specific vital sign, such as blood glucose or heart ECG or a variety of indicators for homebound patients. Such services can be used to supplement the use of visiting nurses.
Telemedicine again has been expanding tremendously because of several benefits that it carries such as, improved access. For many years telemedicine has been used for patient care to be brought to their remote location. It benefits the patient because they do not have to travel far to get the care they need. It also allows for hospitals and physicians to expand their services beyond their offices. For example, if the doctor are in another country they are able to access patient’s health information and provide services to their consumer’s while they are away. Another benefit that telemedicine has is that it is cost effective. One of the reason for creating telemedicine is to keep the cost of patient care affordable. Telemedicine has been shown to reduce the cost of healthcare and increase efficiency through better management of chronic diseases, shared health professional staffing, reduced travel times, and fewer or shorter hospital stays (ATA, 2012). Since telemedicine has evolved quality care improved and satisfied many consumers, it’s just as good as the traditional in person visits at the doctor’s office. It has also, become very superior in the areas of ICU care and mental health. Finally, telemedicine is a consumer’s demand, it has a great impact on consumers and their families. They look forward to the use of telemedicine rather than going to the actual doctor’s visit. Using telemedicine technologies has lessened the travel time for patients and has taken stress away from patient’s that may not like to travel far. Such services offer patients the access to providers that might not be available otherwise, as well as medical services without the need to travel long distances.
