The “Banking” Concept of Education
In Paulo Freire’s essay “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education, Freire allows us to have a look inside his thoughts on his current education system. Even though this essay wasn’t written for our time period, it still is very applicable to our education system today. Every student can probably say they have had one teacher that treats them like an object, and makes it their mission to stuff as much information into them in one hour as they can. This system is known to be the Banking System. The way Freire says we can have a solution is, “The solution is not to ‘integrate’ them into the structure of oppression, but to transform that structure so that they can become ‘beings for themselves’” (p. 320). In this solution, it involves the exchanging of information of students and teacher. In the classroom when you have interaction it helps both parties to learn from each other and benefit in the long run. A way students can do this is by being conscious of their own consciousness. When students do this, it means that they are being aware of what they are learning and not just blindly absorbing the information. Freire says that when students are conscious of their own consciousness it allows them to ask questions, think critically, think out of the box, and apply what they are learning. The type of education that Freire promotes in this essay is called ‘problem posing education’ Freire says, “Education as the practice of freedom – as opposed to education as the practice of domination – denies that man is abstract, isolated, independent, and unattached to the world; it also denies that the world exists as a reality apart from people” (p. 325). In easier words this means that you think outside of box, think critically, and interact with either your students or teachers.
At the high school I graduated from, it seem as if we didn’t have as much banking concept as most high schools would have. The only time it really stuck out would have been my AP Government class my senior year. My teacher was very old school about her ways of teaching and going about things. She didn’t use any power points, no pictures, no videos, just straight lecture for over an hour every single day. Kids would get so bored all the time almost to the point of falling asleep. Mostly every student did average or below average on her tests because they seemed to not learn anything since they weren’t paying any attention. This wasn’t helping our grades in any ways either because we had a grading scale of 80/20, which meant 80% of our grades were our tests scores.
