“The New Black Face Movement”
The New Black movement is encouraging youth of my generation to adopt an attitude of assimilation instead of enduring a fight to keeping our identity. History is important to people of all cultures it helps to guide you by knowing where you’ve come from and it lets you know when you’ve elevated your way of thinking by honoring your ancestors and what they have fought for. James Baldwin stated when we became “one human race” there was never a chance of recognition and healing given to those who were enslaved, taken advantage of, discriminated against and the list goes on and on-- and over 300 years since enslavement the influences are still as prevalent as they were in the middle passages.
Reality shows are the death of our culture and help to propagate the ‘New Black Movement’. “We are very cruelly trapped between what we would like to be and what we actually are. And we cannot possibly become what we would like to be until we are willing to ask ourselves just why the lives we lead on this continent are mainly so empty, so tame, and so ugly” (Baldwin 169) These excuses for men and pin up dolls for women are excruciating to watch and show that there has been no progression for positivity but spread the message that it is okay to be aggressive and behave inappropriately. These women are overly sexualized, overly seductive, and overly abused to the point where there is no feminine energy left. “They are, like Preminger’s Carmen Jones, the aggressive woman, the beautiful woman, the angry woman, the sexually starved woman” (James Baldwin: A Collection of Essays 340). In contrast Griffith's The Birth of a nation shows that of a white man in black face being sex crazed, aggressive, and overall an angry monster. That was 1915 presently in “reality” shows--if they can be really be called reality shows, they remind me more of puppet shows or masquerades; due to the fact the we never truly see reality but more of a set scene like that of a scientist observing amoeba under a microscope or watching animals interact in the zoo; always being controlled by an aggressive but quiet benefactor-- the men are adrift and are terribly emasculated (James Baldwin: A Collection of Essays 110) . True, a...
