Lesson 1
Introduction to Mary
We will look into the history and life of Mary Mother of Jesus. Mary’s background is a key to understanding her as the human mother of the Son of God. Luke 2:6 says, “And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.”
Mary represented every human who needed deliverance. It was almost as if she carried the weight of the world while also carrying the salvation for that world. While many honor her and pray to her over praying to Christ, we will learn of the human side of Mary.
Let's talk about what we already know about Mary, the mother of Jesus:
* She is the mother of Jesus.
* She was married to a man named Joseph
* She was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus
* She gave birth in a barn because there were no vacant rooms in the nearby hotels
* Did you know that she was also the cousin of Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist.

But why did God choose Mary? Well, we are told in Luke 1:28 that Mary was highly favored, that the Lord was with her, and that she was blessed among women. We also learn that Mary found favor with God. Does that mean that Mary was perfect? No quite the opposite. She, like the rest of the people of Israel were still looking for hope. She was still looking for the promised Mesiah (Perkins, Pg. 303). She trusted God with whatever He had planned (Luke 1:46-55).
Was she a god or goddess? No, she was a woman like any other Israelite woman under the Law of Moses: Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, (Gal 4:3-4 KJV). Was she rich and wealthy? Quite the opposite. She and her husband Joseph were poor. We know this by the offering that they gave after Mary’s time of purification when they took Jesus to be presented before the Lord a pair of turtle doves or two pigeons ( Have someone read-Lev. 12:1-8).

The Virgin Prior to the Birth of Christ
When we hear the stories of the Virgin Mary, these are the points that we are told. These are the basic aspects of Mary that we are taught. When we dig a little deeper into the story of Mary we are able to find out who she was, where she was from, and what she did. We will also gain a little insight as to why other religions worship her as a deity and pray to her as though she has the power to make changes in their lives, as opposed to praying to the living God.
